Obesity has been a long gone problem of not just America, but for individuals around the world.

In fact, obese people are even getting bigger to what we now would refer to as severe obesity. This has gotten so much attention that movies such as “Supersize me” have already been created and watched by many.  These types of problems could no longer be solved with comprehensive diets and rigorous body exercise and workouts alone. This now would require specific surgeries to help reduce unwanted body mass. Liposuction was once an option, but with obesity, it may not be that recommended as there would be too much mass to be removed; plus with extreme obesity, it is rather a sickness than a cosmetic problem needing a short term solution. What would be recommended by many doctors and specialized experts alike for this kind of concerns would be Gastric bypass operation. This type of weight-loss surgery promises to cause dramatic reduction of weight of those who are very obese. The procedure is not only designed to provide physical improvements in obese people, but physiological as well, as it improve bodily functions. The treatment may also be described as a preventive procedure, as it helps one avoid other diseases and complications brought about by severe obesity.

Gastric bypass operation works in two simple ways. After the operation, your stomach is smaller; thus, making you feel full with smaller amounts of food intake. This would be commonly referred to as the restrictive procedure. Another way by which Gastric bypass operation works is by letting the food skip some parts of your stomach and the first section of your small intestine (duodenum) when you eat, and lets the food go straight to the second section of your small intestine (jejunum). What this does is it limits the amount of calories absorbed by the body; thus, making fat deposits and absorption kept to a minimum. The downside of this is that in the same process, some of the nutrients are deprived from the body and are lost as well. This procedure would be commonly referred to as a bypass or a malabsorptive procedure. Some surgeries would be designed to use both techniques. It would depend on the evaluation given by the doctor prior to the operation, in evaluating what would best suit the patient. The typical procedure of the operation would be the division of your stomach in to a small upper section (which would hold the food and be referred to as the “Pouch”) and a bigger lower section. The lower section would be “stapled”, depriving it from the entrance of food, and connecting the pouch to the small intestine.

Gastric bypass operation is not an instant cosmetic enhancement operation that you can just keep on undergoing operation. It does have its repercussions and risks. If an individual is not ready to have and maintain a healthier and cleaner lifestyle after the operation, he or she might reconsider even undergoing the procedure. GBP would take more than a knife cutting through your abdomen to give you a better and healthier you. In the end, commitment would be the biggest price to pay.
